Ryanair Resists Starlink Adoption Amid Elon Musk Buyout Threat
Ryanair remains steadfast in its refusal to adopt SpaceX's Starlink internet service for short-haul flights, citing economic impracticalities. CFO Neil Sorahan emphasized the 2% fuel drag from antenna installations WOULD erode the airline's razor-thin margins, with most passengers unwilling to pay for connectivity on two-hour flights.
The standoff escalated into a public feud between Elon Musk and Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary, resulting in a 2-3% bookings boost for the airline. Musk's satirical Twitter poll about acquiring Ryanair garnered 76.5% approval, though EU aviation regulations make such a MOVE impossible.
"It was two big idiots having a go," Sorahan remarked, downplaying the ongoing spat. The airline maintains its focus on cost efficiency, with pre-downloaded entertainment satisfying most passengers' needs.
